Going down the water, descent of the Moravice River

Text: Jiří Matuszek

Who wouldn’t like to ride the waves of a boat at least once?  There are plenty of options at this time of year and you don’t have to go all the way to the sea or the Bata Canal.

Today we will talk about the Moravice River. A beautiful river in an amazing canyon created by the water of this beautiful river over millions of years.

Usually in the spring at Easter and in the autumn, the Oder basin releases water from the Slezská Harta and Kružberk dams to ensure sufficient water for paddlers.

The start of this easy cruise begins just below the dam of the Kružberk reservoir. Perhaps someone will remember Dietl’s famous series The Big Saddle about the life of people around the dam. It was in this picturesque region that the stories connected with nature and the river took place. If you don’t have the necessary things for this pastime, it doesn’t matter at all, for a small fee you can rent a boat and its equipment and then just enjoy the beauty of this river. During the cruise you will pass two castle ruins on the hills, namely Kružberk Castle and Vikštejn Castle. The latter castle has a very colourful history and a sad end, when the owner had it blown up before the Swedes took it over.

The next cruise continues through meanders full of rocks, tramp settlements and green forests. You can experience a bit of adrenaline as you pass through the Weisshuhn weir. Fortunately, this is just one challenging spot, and although it may look scary at first glance, everything is safe and overcoming this obstacle will only add to the perfect cruising experience.

The beautiful sceneries of the forgotten valley ends in Hradec nad Moravicí, where you can visit the architectural gem of the Red Castle.
